![]() It just crossed my desk this evening, but I am told by its developer that Readwise uses a browser extension to automatically download your Kindle highlights from the cloud. This is another annotation management tool. You can use those extensions to clip web content and essentially make an online notebook. It can import your Kindle notes, but it also has extensions for all the major (as well as Safari). This service (which I first found as a Chrome extension) is a general purpose note and highlight manager. You can even automatically export them to Evernote. Once you have the notes you can share them online, or export them in a variety of file formats. ![]() You can also automatically import the notes from your Kindle, or the the Kindle apps for iOS and Android. This web-based service can integrate with your Kindle account and automatically import your notes (via a $2 Chrome extension). You can also use the app to open Kindle for macOS and read the note or highlight in the ebook it came from. Once you have them you can manage them in the app, or export them in Evernote or Markdown formats. This macOS-only app lets you import your notes from a myclippings file or from. This tool has not been updated since 2017. Kindle Mate is a neat tool with rich features designed to sync, organize, import & export Kindle clippings (Kindle highlights and notes) and Kindle Vocabulary Builder words on your computer. This tool has not been updated since 2014. The system can be customized to output files in a wide variety of formats. This is an open source software package that helps you import your Kindle’s “My Clippings.txt” into other programs. For example, it can manage the ebooks on your Kindle – and it can also collect and organize your annotations.Īnd it’s not the only app with this feature. CalibreĮveryone knows that calibre is an ebook conversion and library management app, but sometimes some of its features are overlooked. This tool is installed as a bookmarklet, and you use it by clicking the bookmarklet while visiting the book’s page on .īookcision will reformat the page so you have a cleaner view of your notes, and you can then copy them to notepad (Chrome users can also download them).Īnd if you are using macOS, you (might) have an alternative: Notescraper. This tool has not been updated since 2015. I don’t think it’s worth it, but (to name one example) I can see how an author might want to use this type of automation with their beta readers. ![]() K2E is a Chrome app that will automatically upload your Kindle Notes and highlights to Evernote. It costs $1 a month. I like the idea, though, so I am hoping someone will take it over and get it running again. This is a bookmarklet-based tool that is designed to take your my clippings text file and spit out an EML file you can import into Evernote. ![]() To be honest, I don’t find either tool very useful they grab the whole page rather than the key parts. Evernote has a similar tool, and you can use them to snag your notes and highlights by going to /your_highlights and clipping the page. Microsoft’s note-taking app has a tool where you can clip a webpage and import it into a notebook. (That sounds strange, I know, but if you use spreadsheets a lot then this would be a great first step.) OneNote Clipper There are a wide variety of tools out there, including some as simple as the one that converts your myclippings text file into a CSV. That older post focused heavily on Amazon tools like the email export features in the Kindle apps for iOS and Android (which are now available on the Kindle and Kindle Fire). This post covers just non-Amazon tools you can use to manage your Kindle clippings. Much has changed in the past couple years since this post was first published Amazon has added new features to the Kindle platform and some of the tools I found then are no longer supported by their developers (in fact, one or two tools in this post were simply abandoned and had their domains snapped up by gay porn sites). I recently updated my four-year-old post on Kindle annotation tools, and I realized it was time to do this post as well. Amazon’s Kindle is a great reading platform with a number of useful annotation features, but sometimes it’s not enough.

InCopy and InDesign have the ability to package files from an InCopy Workflow to facilitate the editing of stories in InCopy as well as the updating of those files in InDesign. We’re hoping to have a blog post on this topic soon. Another excellent solution is to use DropBox or Google Drive as a server for the InCopy workflow. Smaller companies however, don’t always have this capability, and the bandwidth of your home internet connection might be two reasons why this setup might not work for you. Before we dive into how the package feature works, it’s worth mentioning that if you have a fast enough internet connection and VPN access to your company’s server it is possible to work remotely using InCopy as if you were sitting in an office at corporate HQ. Fortunately, InCopy can and does work quite well for the remote user using the package feature. Specific InCopy workflows come in all different flavors, and because InCopy is so versatile, you can use it to meet the needs of each one of those workflows. These vulnerabilities were subsequently patched during Mac OS and iOS updates but it was some time after the threats were already circulating on the Internet. In fact, there have been recent Zero-Day threats that Apple confirmed are in the wild that the Mac firewall and other built-in protocols could not defend against. In my experience there seem to be many Mac users who assume that the built-in security protections are sufficient protection against all threats. In many, if not most cases, it may prevent apps from performing essential functions, such as auto-updating software when that feature is enabled. And that can be a lot of apps if you like to use third-party apps, like many of us do. Regarding the recommendation by “abc” to configure the Mac firewall to “block all incoming connections,” if you do that it will cause problems with every app that relies on incoming network connections. Simple network analyzer and firewall app.To sum up, if you are looking for a Little Snitch alternative, but with less advanced features then TCPBlock can be a great pick. Do note that it does not work on Mojave so you can use it on older versions of macOS. And just like Little Snitch, you can create a custom list of apps and services which can access the internet so that is great. Besides that, the app is pretty lightweight and does not hog your computer resources. There is also a network log feature where you can find all the details of apps which have established internet connection in the past. While the app is not the best in terms of user experience, it surely works and you can use it to block outbound connections. TCPBlock is another popular app like Little Snitch which acts like both a network monitor and a firewall. To bare it all, if you want a Little Snitch alternative which is being actively developed right now, Netiquette is the best app to opt for. I would say Netiquette is the most clean and simple network monitor you can get on macOS. However, we can expect with further release Netiquette will gain these features. As of now, it does not have custom rules and app list features. With Netiquette, you can view outbound network connections, block them and also export network log for further research. But Netiquette’s simple and intuitive design makes it distinct from Lulu and Little Snitch. Similar to Lulu, it’s completely free and open-source so that’s awesome. It’s still in beta, but the app surprisingly works great. Netiquette is a latest network monitoring tool created by Objective-See team who have developed another app in this list, Lulu. Hands Off: Install (Free, one-time purchase of $49.99) Expensive (Costs even more that Little Snitch). The app is pretty simple and easy to use. To sum up, Hands Off is definitely a strong contender if you are looking to replace Little Snitch. You can easily breeze through the advanced settings and create your own set of rules and app exclusion list. What I like about Hands Off is that it does not feel too advanced, unlike Little Snitch which can be overwhelming on the face for normal users. Whenever an app tries to establish a connection, you get a notification alert whether to allow or block the connection altogether. The app allows you to protect your privacy by enabling the sniffing mode which blocks all the applications and services from accessing any remote server. Hands Off easily ranks among the best Little Snitch alternatives because it has both advanced features and user-friendly interface. Simply put, if you are looking for a free Little Snitch alternative, there is no app better than Lulu. Only when you grant permission, apps will be able to establish a connection. Which essentially means that the moment you install Lulu, it will start blocking apps from accessing the internet. Also, the distinct part about Lulu is that it comes in pre-blocking mode by default. You can easily find apps which are making outgoing connections and block them straight away with a single click. Surprisingly, unlike other open-source apps, Lulu looks absolutely great with a beautiful user-friendly design and customizable interface. It’s an open-source app and completely free without any limitations on outbound or inbound connections. And the best part is, just like Little Snitch, you will receive a notification prompt whenever an app or service tries to make a connection. Apart from that, you can go deep and monitor what processes are trying to establish a connection with online servers. |
